Connolly doubles up at 5k

Posted on January 8, 2012 at 1:55 PM Comments comments (0)

Margaret Connolly had two very pleasing runs at recent races. She posted a time just outside 25 minutes at Whitstable, but ran 24.51 at Deal finishing first in her age group. Well done Margaret. Margaret will be taking in some more Park runs and an open 10k in the coming weeks where hopefully more progression will come.

Next tempo run

Posted on January 8, 2012 at 1:50 PM Comments comments (0)

The next tempo run is scheduled for Saturday 21st January 9.00am start from Beachborough Traffic Lights. All welcome!! I was the only one who made it this week! Things have to start somewhere. At least I managed to get my run in.

Remember run distances are infinite. Will be looking for 6 miles next time. Wish you all well and thank you for your interest, whoever you are.

Saturday Tempo/Marathon Pace Runs

Posted on December 30, 2011 at 11:40 AM Comments comments (0)

If you are looking to improve your times, why not join me for a tempo run on Saturday morning. We/I will be starting (9.00am) Meet Beachborough Traffic Lights  with a warm up of the predominantly traffic free loop which takes in both Folkestone Central and Folkestone West Stations. Options of distance are infinite.

However to give you an idea, a 4 mile loop starting at Beachborough traffic lights takes in 2 laps, plus the finishing straight along Cheriton Road finishing at the roundabout opposite the Park Inn Pub.

A 5 mile loop takes in almost exactly 3 loops. Those with garmins will have assistance.

It will be up to individuals to decide on their goals, but as a guide a recent performance can indicate suggestions for training speeds and these can be found on the Jack Daniels' tables of performance. Can be accessed on the web or you can get copies from me.

Ideally a true tempo run  is advised/suggested to be 15-20 secs slower than your current 10k ability. This can prove to be attainable for many, but if targets appear to be too difficult then adjustments may need to be made.

Marathon paced runs are less intense and again time/mile can be found on Daniels' charts. Again these might prove difficult for some, particularly if a long term aim is to run between 10-15 miles in a workout. A suggestion that has been made is to start at 4 miles and build a mile at a time on the workouts that follow. Again, individuals do need to decide what they can handle. Better to errrr, rather than blow it and not achieve.

These runs should be positive in every way, so realistic targets are extremely important. Better to finish stronger at the end of a workout that has been conquered, rather than being conquered throughout a run where you are chasing a target that is out of range.

I recently completed a marathon paced run on the strength of my perceived 5k ability. I errrrd on the side of caution and set what I thought was a realistic goal and still felt that there was an element of me chasing, so it's very much a case of feeling the way for the first 1 or 2 efforts, before confidence in ability/and knowing your ability is achieved.

Come along and meet your challenge. These sessions definitely tell you where you are in terms of your running.

Harriers @ Deal 5 miler

Team members Margaret Connolly and Ali Scott were out running yesterday's Deal 5. Conditions are notoriously windy and wet and yesterday was no exception, but both athletes ran well - Margaret recording a time just outside 40 mins and Ali around the 32 minute mark.

Kendell Fine Run at Givaudan 10k

Posted on October 9, 2011 at 3:10 PM Comments comments (0)

Harriers' Matt Kendell had a fantastic run in today's Givaudan 10k. It was a real break through run for this tenacious and talented young man. Matt who has been training with Mike Coleman is now beginning to see the fruits of all of his hard work. 8th place in 35.51 could be the beginning of something big. A great run and great to see the harriers back at the front of the field.

Harriers' Margaret Connolly also ran well 51.56 after a week recovering from some very difficult dental surgery. Tough stuff from Margaret!

Congratulations to Michael Coleman and Matt Kendell who were 2nd and 4th in Friday's 5k road race at Victoria Park Ashford. MIke posted a time of 15.34 and Matt was a low 17 minute clocking.

Well done also to Keith Munro who again is still hitting top spots in the V60s, most recently at the Charing 10k.
